This discussion board post is a strong example of my reading comprehension skills as well as my ability to connect specific texts to larger ideas and concepts. In this discussion post, I identify and analyze the most significant theme from the text, using a quote to solidify my claim. I explain the quote and its significance to the concepts in the text. In doing so, I am able to move beyond a simple reiteration or summary of the text and identifying the main points. I insert my own analysis in both the first and second paragraphs of the post by connecting to current day issues and addressing the implications of the theme. I next give my general reaction to the text and how I felt about the level of the text. In the post, I said that the text was easy to understand, but I had to look up some words as I read. This shows an active participation with the text, and that I am able to recognize when I need to look up words to ensure that I understand the reading. Overall, the discussion board post shows that I can understand a reading and move beyond the text to make connections with the course, other texts, and greater issues. I feel that this is a great example of my current abilities in reading as well as the growth I have made. When I began studying Spanish, I was able to read simple texts and understand them, but this post shows that I can read beyond simple texts meant for an elementary or middle school Spanish.
